Tandet
Logistics receives “Excellent Carrier Rating” by
Department of Transport
The
Ministry of Transportation, Road User Safety Division’s
Registrar of Motor Vehicles is required to assign a safety rating
according to their Carrier Rating Program to every operator
using Ontario’s roadways. “In accordance with Section
17.1(1) of the Highway Traffic Act, Tandet Logistics Inc is
hereby notified that, based on its safety record, the following
safety rating is proposed for your operation – EXCELLENT.”
According
to Scott Tilley, Vice President of Tandet, this rating is very
hard to achieve, representing less than 10% of the carriers
of Ontario. This is a real tribute both to the drivers and the
Tandet safety team - Dave Herdman, Safety Training Supervisor
and Gord Jackman Safety/Training in the Sarnia Logistics office
and Glen Corbeil, ISO Coordinator and Risk & Compliance
Manager in the Oakville head office.

Valleybrook
Gardens plans for the seasonal rush
Meeting
peak demand when you are in a seasonal business doesn’t
just happen according to Phil Goodfellow, General Manager
of Valleybrook Gardens of Niagara-on-the-Lake. It is all about
good planning. According to Goodfellow “Product distribution
is critical for us, which is why we partner with Tandet. We
have only one leased truck year-round, but in the spring we
ramp this up with twelve rental trucks. The timing of these
is weather dependent so we have to either slow down or desperately
accelerated our planned schedule in response to the weather.
Reacting to this uncertain delivery schedule can be very challenging
for a supplier, especially in spring when there is already
a high demand for truck rentals. But Tandet meet our needs.”
Valleybrook ships perennials and other time-sensitive plant
stock throughout the North-Eastern and Mid-Western United
States as well as throughout Ontario. “Tandet also removes
operational worries from us by ensuring we have the proper
licence and insurance coverage” says Goodfellow. “A
Tandet fuel program helps to simplify the management of the
fleet, and their North American wide NationaLease service
coverage has proven most effective. One time a transmission
went on a truck on the New York throughway near Erie. Tandet
was fast to respond with a replacement truck so our Heritage
Perennials could continue their trip to Virginia.
“Safety
is important to us and we recognize that while accidents can
happen in a busy season, a lot can be done to minimize this
possibility,” said Goodfellow. Tandet’s Safety
& Training group ran a Driving Training Day for Valleybrook
at the beginning of the season because over half of the drivers
are new. It covered safe driving techniques, what to expect
at truck inspection stations in Ontario and the United States,
issues on border crossings, and safe loading and unloading.
“In addition to our concern for the well being of our
employees, we know that the business cost of an accident can
be the loss of service credibility with our clients, which
can often be far greater than the cost of damage to vehicles.
We plan with Tandet for success in our seasonal business.”

Your
kind of trucks
Every
fleet has some unique requirements regarding truck specifications.
At Tandet we will meet your needs with whatever specification,
specialty equipment or truck brand you need. Whether it is a
Navistar, Hino, Freightliner, Volvo or other name brands, Tandet
will help you determine just what specifications and financing
will best suit your business. We may give you a comparative
quotation on a Kenworth because we like them, but the final
decision is yours. We will support you whichever way you go.
The
diverseness of trucks is carried through into the Tandet rental
fleet as well - from the Freightliner flatbeds to Hino straight
trucks, which are popular for city deliveries since a G-license
is all that is required, and it has a short turning radius.

Growth
of a Diamond operation
Supplier
relationships play a key role in the success of most businesses.
With Diamond Towing, their relationship with Tandet Kenworth
is important to their business performance.
Diamond
Towing and Float Service Inc. of Bolton Ontario was incorporated
by Lori Colwill in 1997. At that time, the fleet consisted of
four trucks supported by three full-time drivers including Lori’s
husband Greg, a dispatcher, and a part-time office clerk. Diamond
has grown extensively over the years to a fleet that now includes
three heavy trucks, three floats, four flatbeds, two medium
tow trucks, and a Hazmat division with three dedicated units
and five battery assist vehicles. No matter what type of service
is required, be it a battery boost, a short haul or a cross-border
move, Diamond is capable of recovering and/or transporting any
vehicle anywhere with the greatest efficiency possible.
Diamond has
emphasized quality in their quest to be the best – quality
of both their drivers and their equipment. All of their drivers
are certified professionals who are continually taking training,
and for their new equipment Diamond has selected Kenworth trucks.
“Our
equipment selection was based only partially on the truck brand
reputation,” said Lori Colwill, President of Diamond.
“It had as much to do with Rick Kader and Tandet Kenworth
of Kingston. Rick makes himself available to us 24 hours a day,
every day. No matter what comes up, Rick is there to keep us
growing. It’s worth the drive to Kingston to get your
Kenworths.” Recently Diamond extended the Tandet relationship
by engaging Tandet NationaLease in Mississauga to maintain their
trucks in the GTA area. Glen Berg, Tandet Solutions Manager
set up a preventative maintenance program that would ensure
they are always ready for their emergency calls. For more information
on Kenworth trucks, call Rick Kader at 1-800-267-0212 or e-mail
rkader@tandet.com and for Maintenance
programs, call Glen Berg at 905-795-9452 or e-mail gberg@tandet.com.

Load
Security Regulations - Effective July 1 2005
As of July 1, 2005 New Load Security Regulations
will be fully enforced to all flat beds or specific commodity
loads. In Ontario the rules include ALL commercial vehicles
including vehicles under 4,500 kgs GVW (gross vehicle weight)
. This in effect means that any vehicle that requires an annual
inspection must comply with the new regulations - like pickups
and small trailers if they are transporting these loads.
They
have a guiding principle – “Cargo being transported
on the highway must remain secured on or within the transporting
vehicle under all conditions that could be reasonably expected
to occur in normal driving including responding to all emergency
situations but not including a crash.”
The
Cargo Securement Regulations set out the general requirements
for most freight hauled on flat beds, itemizing 9 specific commodities
for more specific requirements. The rules are called “National
Safety Code Standard 10 – Cargo Securement” and
Ontario Traffic Act Regulation #363/04.
The
specific commodities are as follows:
-
Logs
-
Dressed
Lumber
-
Metal
Coils
-
Paper
Rolls
-
Concrete
Pipe
-
Intermodal
Containers
-
Automobiles,
Light Trucks, and Vans
-
Heavy
Vehicles, Equipment and Machinery
-
Flattened
or Crushed Vehicles
-
Roll-On/Roll-Off
and Hook Lift Containers
-
Large
Boulders
In addition to outlining specific fastening methods,
the regulations also state that the load must be inspected within
the first 80 kms of the trip after the pre-trip inspection -
and then at every change of duty status or 3 hours or 240 kms
of driving. The 80 km inspection must be noted on the log (if
used) as a flag “LC” and the town of inspection
on the drivers log or other paperwork; this will be checked
by MTO inspectors.
For more information go to the MTO website, contact
your Tandet representative, or click on this link for a summary:

Making
safety a daily personal ritual
Daily
walkabout –
Truck drivers get in the habit of doing a walk around their
vehicles before getting into the cab to check for low tire pressure,
broken lights, dirty windows and mirrors. Why not make this
a routine in your own vehicle? And once a week when you drive
into your garage or are in front of a store window that will
reflect their performance – check that all your lights
are working (signal, night beams and brakes). This simple safety
practice could save you from having an accident some day.
